SSS COUNSELOR ONE-ON-ONE MEETINGS

One of the best advantages to being a member of the SSS Program is having a designated counselor who meets with each student on a bi-weekly basis to discuss academic and personal issues that may be barriers to success. Based on a student’s individual situation, additional meetings may be required by the counselor or requested by the student. Counselors advocate on behalf of the student, provide programming to assist with transitions that occur during college and encourage the student to reach his or her full potential.

SUCCESSNAVIGATOR ASSESSMENT

SSS members complete the SuccessNavigator Assessment to determine in which areas the student is strong and where there is room for improvement. Based on the results, the counselor evaluates where the student’s knowledge, skill, and ability levels are currently; determines how he or she can build on those levels; and provides the tools the student needs to excel.

STUDENT ACTION PLAN

The Student Support Action Plan documents the SSS participants' progress. The counselor and student create an individualized pathway for achieving appropriate academic success and timely graduation.

ACADEMIC MONITORING/EARLY INTERVENTION

Software such as GradesFirst assists the counselors in monitoring student performance, academic progress, and SSS Program usage. If a student receives an early warning grade (4th week) or midterm grade (8th week) of a D or F, the counselor takes immediate action to assist the student in getting the resources he or she needs to improve.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT RESOUCES

All SSS students are required to attend six hours of study hall time each week. Tutoring is available for all SSS members, but may be required for those falling below a B. Supplemental Instruction sessions are peer-assisted study sessions that serve as a an informal review for GEC courses in which students compare notes, discuss readings, practice critical thinking and study for exams. Additionally, SSS participants have access to a specially designated computer lab and printer in the Alexander-Dunn Building from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. five days per week.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING WORKSHOPS

Financial programming ensures SSS students are aware of and understand all the avenues of financial support at their disposal. Money management workshops are offered on topics such as using credit cards, checking credit scores, creating a budget and finding creative ways to save. The impact of student loan debt is stressed, and to reduce students’ dependency on loans, qualifying students will receive an Educational Opportunity Grant supplied through the SSS Program.

EAGLE TALONS ENGAGEMENT SERIES

Offered once per week, the Eagle TALONS Series presents students with more in-depth information on many of the topics covered in the University Seminar Course. They provide practical tools and tips that can be put into practice right away to enhance students’ knowledge and success.

COMMON UNIVERSITY SEMINAR COURSE

All students (except transfers) are required to take the University Seminar course. Those who are part of the SSS Program and have not yet taken the course will participate in a common class in which all the students are SSS Program members. The course is specifically structured to meet SSS participants’ needs and cover topics including time management, study strategies, test taking, using the library, career exploration, stress management, financial planning, and many others.
